Supervises a unit consisting of technical support staff. Responsible for the prompt and fair resolution of claims, maintaining a high level of claim handling quality, managing total claim costs, staff performance management and providing high levels of customer service. May also carry a case load and directly supervise and process claims assigned to outside vendors.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises the claim handling unit which includes selection, termination, training, coaching, monitoring, Human Resources planning and development, performance reviews and recommending salary changes in accordance with measures of efficiency and productivity standards.
  • Assists in establishing and implementing effective unit performance goals and measurements that are aligned with business objectives.
  • Directs claim investigation, evaluation, reserving, disposition, processing and recovery procedures within assigned authority in accordance with best practices.
  • Ensure the prompt and fair resolution of claims and high levels of customer service.
  • Recognize and monitor problematic claims files and ensure an appropriate claims strategy and action plan is in place to ensure appropriate resolution with an eye towards litigation avoidance.
  • Ability to effectively and accurately analyze complex coverage issues and prepare coverage letters.
  • Provide “back up” for Claim Manager as needed
  • Conducts unit and individual claim file reviews to assure high quality claim service and effective management of total claim cost.
  • Effectively manage and control overall loss adjustment expenses, (ALE and ULE), through proper selection and utilization of cost effective vendor and efficient utilization of all available claim resources, internal and external.
  • Process and directly supervise claims assigned to outside vendors within assigned authority.
  • Stay abreast of industry changes and trends and assists Claims Manager in reviewing, researching, responding and disseminating changes as appropriate in industry trends, jurisdictional issues and regulatory issues to assure compliance.
  • Actively and effectively participate in CAT planning and management.
  • Actively monitor and effectively analyze and respond to improvement opportunities and trends identified in information provided in claim management reports.
  • Work effectively with other departments in the organization on shared issues and to effect positive change.

Minimum Requirements

Education, training, and experience:


  • College graduate and/or equivalent combination of High School Diploma/GED, training and work experience.
  • CPCU and/or other insurance related courses preferred.
  • 3-5 years claim handling experience preferred.
  • 2-3 years previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain state adjuster licensing in applicable states within 120 days of employment and maintain licensing requirements as a requirement of continued employment.
