  • Summary

    The Litigation Paralegal works closely with the General Counsel and the Claims Litigation Executive, legal and compliance staff, claims staff and outside counsel regarding litigated case management from the notice of representation or complaint and answer through discovery to settlement, trial and appeals. This position reports to the General Counsel.

    Essential Functions

    • Supports and works with the General Counsel and the Claims Litigation Executive to provide efficient and effective management of litigation matters.
    • Works with outside counsel responsible for each matter to ensure timely and complete filing and service of litigation materials including pleadings, discovery materials, subpoenas and briefs.
    • Manages files to ensure receipt of timely and effective status memorandum from outside counsel.
    • Assists outside counsel and claims staff, in the preparation of discovery requests and responses and other materials and documents necessary for litigation.
    • Adheres to legal document standards to ensure proper format and completeness for court acceptance.
    • Reviews and analyzes all court documents received to determine appropriate actions or responses required, under supervision of the General Counsel and the Catastrophe Claims Litigation Executive.
    • Performs legal research and prepares summaries of analysis as needed.
    • Performs analysis, review, and compilation of file documentation to ensure accuracy required during litigation discovery process.
    • Reviews and replies to various correspondences from internal and external contacts as necessary.
    • Manage electronic sets of documents.
    • Oversees document deliveries and tracks final executed documentation. 
    • Attends meetings regarding litigation process and issues, as necessary.
    • Calendars and monitors litigation deadline dates.
    • Accurately documents transactions and status in claims system.

    Additional Responsibilities

    •  Performs other related duties as required and assists with special projects.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education, training, and experience:

    • BA/BS and/or Paralegal Certificate (or Attorney Attestation under California Business & Professions Code)
    • 2+ years of personal lines litigation and case management experience preferred
    • Strong knowledge of State and Federal civil procedures, rules of court, and local rules
    • Experience performing legal research, maintaining/organizing client case files, and drafting of various general litigation documents
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office; Word, Excel and Outlook
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment to ensure timely and accurate response to litigation requirements.
    • Superior communication and organization skills, including ability to prepare persuasive correspondence to external parties and to articulate complex issues in an understandable manner.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work efficiently and accurately under frequent time pressures.
    • Proficiency in the use of multiple word processing and PC-based software packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy, able to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines
    • Ability to works well with management and co-workers
